This is an annual event held at Elgin's Bluff City Boulevard Cemetery. If you've never been on a Cemetery walk, they are a lot of fun (even if you can't 'see' the people that are being portrayed.')Annual Cemetery WalkOn the 4th Sunday of September each year, the Elgin Area Historical Society hosts the Cemetery Walk at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin. This beautiful and historic cemetery is the final resting place of many prominent Elginites and has many fine examples of elaborate headstones and mausoleums. Noteworthy citizens are portrayed at their gravesites by members of the Society and other volunteer performers, in authentic historical costumes and in character. The life and times of people buried in the cemetery is presented through a living window to the past in a touching and memorable way?in their own words. The 2007 WalkThe 2007 walk will take place on Sept. 23, noon to 3:30 PM. The cemetery is located on Bluff City Boulevard, approximately 1/2 mile east of the intersection with Liberty Street (Rt. 25). Bluff City Boulevard is located one block south of U.S. 20 on Elgin's east side. Here's a brief introduction to the people featured on the 2006 Walk.John Qualen :Arenowned Hollywood character actor for more than 40 years, John was in more than 100 film, includingThe Grapes of Wrath,Casablanca, andElmer Gantry.May Hunter Snow:Wife of Gilbert Snow, the general manager of the Elgin Wind Power and Pump Company.Nicholas Goedert:Emigrated from Belgium at the age of 18. By 1884 he was the owner of an "honest saloon" in Elgin.Leopold Adler:A German-born Jewish merchant who opened an Elgin clothing store offering "the best goods at the lowest prices"in 1859.Adoniram J. Joslyn: Pastor of the Elgin Baptist Church, later editor of theWeekly Gazette, he crusaded tirelessly against slavery and drinking.Cyrus King Wilber:Elgin lawyer, also prominent in the railroad business. His involvement in Elgin's amateur baseball team, the Bluff Citys, provides memorable stories.Nellie Mann Chappell: The daughter of prominent Elgin citizens and wife of a dentist whose divorce brought unexpected and unwelcome notoriety.

Tried to make it to the one you did your senior year, but was to late for the walk itself.  I ended up helping Mom pack up those history of Cary book she was helping to sell and leaving...

I know I had something to do earlier that day, and for the life of me I cannot remember what it was, I think I had come home from school for a dentist appointment or something.

I used to do cemetery walks in high school as part of our drama group.  They had us dress up as the people buried in the Cary Cem for Memorial Day.  I loved it.  Senior Year was the most fun because I got to play a german immigrant - did the accent 'und' everything... LOL.  So many asked me if I was really from Germany!

Ann - surprised if you never went to one of those.  I could swear you did.  I know mom always did, but to chat with the ladies running it, she knew them personally.

Anyways, they're lots of fun, especially if you get to participate!

That is really awesome! She really was driven to succeed! Can you imagine working in an environment that makes you sick. Thank goodness not to many of us have to deal with that now days.

Elgin sure has some cool things to do and see! Wish Harvard was half as interesting!

I'll tell ya, she was quite the person to communicate with.  I was amazed at what the woman had gone through in her life.  She started out as a young girl working at the Elgin Watch Factory, then she got bone cancer in her jaw from the Radium they used in the watches, and had to have a large part of her jaw removed.  She survived, and decided she needed to do something with her life.  She was the first woman to graduate from college in Illinois, and she also worked for the rest of her life to help women become more educated.

Fascinating person and VERY driven!

For those of you who may not know what a cemetery walk is, they are a ton of fun!Basically, actors portray important people buried in the cemetery. For example, at Bluff City cemetery last year they had the man who started the Borden's Sweetened Condensed Milk Company.Theyspeak as if they were the person and you get a real insight into the history of the area. Not to mention, (this might sound morbid) but a lot of theheadstones contain some absolutely gorgeous sculptures. It really is a fun time, but there is usually a fair bit of walking involved. You walk to the areas where the different reanactors are waiting.
That is so funny!!! She must have been a very proper lady to say the least!

For someone like me it is fun when the person the actor is portraying is also there.  I remember once at the Dundee Cemetery West there was an actress pretending to be the first women in Illinois to receive a college degree.  The actress was in Victorian costume with those high heel boots and she'd been standing by the gravesite for about 2 hours when the time came for my tour.  The woman she was portraying was very unhappy about how the actress was shifting her weight because her feet hurt.  She literally told me that 'Only young children and piglets should fidget so much!'  Ouch!
