I have a family friend that lives down the street in what used to be a funeral home sometime in the 40's and 50's I believe. Well, the person living there now knows about that, but I don't think she knows of all the happenings and history of the place before she moved in. Obviously, the place would seem haunted since it was once a funeral home, but a relative of the owners also committed suicide in the basement. Another family friend of mine used to live in the house when she was little and would tell of a ghost of a little girl that she had no hesitation speaking to at an early age. When the current family first moved in, the husband and wife were having a "picnic" in their living room before everything was moved in. Although all of the doors and windows were shut, a cold breeze went through the room and blew out the candles that were lit. I guess the wife has said that she feels there is some presence in the house. I had also felt like someone was watching me whenever I used to go there to babysit years ago, and that was before I knew of the prior history of the home. Whenever I go over there now, I have my eyes, ears, andmind open to anything going on, but can't say I'veexperienced anything. Also, my dad had told me of a photo that was taken of he and some friends back around 1970 in a house that was to be demolished in North Aurora. A girlfriend took a photo of the group sitting on a staircase, and my dad says that faces appeared to be coming out of the walls and inbetween people. She sent it to Kodak and theysaid it was authentic and not tampered with. He seemed quite shaken upwhen he toldmy uncle and I about this, but said he'd try to locate the woman and the photo she took so I could get a look at it (I'll post it up if I ever get it). I have a feeling he wouldn't even want to look at the photo if it were given to him. He also says he used to hearfootsteps andvoices in the attic of his grandmother's victorian home in Aurora (only he and her lived there).Anyways, those are my stories, just thought I'd share!

This is something to bring up at the next meeting. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/illinois/mchenry.htm

This is a link to a project that is going on throughout the country. They are looking for volunteers to transcribe and take pictures of headstones to preserve the memorial before time and weather destroys them .

I think we should do this as a group. It has two benefits.  1. we will be helping preserve these which is very important.                                                                            2. it will allow us access to the cemetaries and less likely to cause problems

From the looks of the website the majority of the ones in McHenry County are not being done yet. We can get a group together and do some as a group. It is quiet work so we can investigate at the same time.

YES it is the one near there!!! Ahhh cool, maybe we can share this obsession with it then LOL. That's a good idea . . also, what does it take to get it "plagued" or recognized by the historical society? If it's a landmark it can't be "moved" and I'm really worried about that because if anyone's been over there lately they are really building up around there. There is a cemetery in McHenry not quite as old asthis one and it got a historical landmark status. Do I recommend it or something???? Anyone know how this works? I don't see why it SHOULD NOT be protected . . . .

Mandy you make me laugh,,,,and the word is "plaqued" not plagued.....we want the cemetary to get historical status on the Bubonic Plague

(which would be historical for sure...maybe even hysterical.....LOL)      This cemetery may even be on private property. Lets find out

Is this cemetary anywhere near Lippold Park , sorta ?

If it is I know of it only recently and am fixated on it , lol. Maybe we can discuss it further and I ws thinking even if we can't do anything there maybe out of the goodness of our hearts we could clean it up ? A special gathering if you will? I'd be more than willing to do this without ever having touched a piece of equipment there , it pisses me off that people have such little respect for the deceased and I know you all feel the same.

Anyhoo , just something to think about. I think with several of us on the task iwe could manage it in a small amount of time

Yes!  The Crystal Lake-Union Cemetery Association is who was "responsible" for it, in 2003 anyway.  I wonder if we would talk to them if we wanted to go there or just ask the police department?  I mean, I know we would have to tell them anyway . . I'm not even sure if this is incorporated Crystal Lake cuz it's usually just listed as being "Dorr Township."  Oh!  Some of you may already know this, but it seems that it is actually supposed to be TABOR and not THABOR.  Small difference, but the sources at the library all said Tabor.  We were not able to find out how or why there is a name conflict.

I DO still have some of my stuff.  But back then I was stupid enough to "lend" my pics to friends so they could show friends . . . and I never got some back.    The hard thing about EVPS here is the constant traffic on 176.   Some of the best pics I took there were with black and white film and I think I actually ran across them in some box not long ago.  I will look.  My all time BEST pic was lost (to a friend ) BUT my cousin and I found some negatives in my "ghostie storage box" from that year (I kept all negatives) and we were thinking about getting them re-developed or whatever in hopes of finding that pic again!!!!

Yes, you're right - it is the Lake Ave. cemetery where the girl on fire thing allegedly happened.  Was there anything about this is the news Mandy?  I never knew if the story was real or not, but I would like to find some notation of it somewhere other than the SL board to know it is actual fact.  It would be interesting to know if anyone has caught evidence here!

And as for Mt. Thabor, it's one of the first places in our area that I found out was haunted.  I've only ever been there during the daytime, which it's rather tranquil then.  But I do admit it is rather "ruined" by litter, and I did notice the outhouse seemed a collection for party-goers' beer remenants more than anything.  I wonder if we would be able to get permission to hunker down there after hours.  Do you know who currently owns the cemetery, Mandy?  I would be interested in hearing your EVP or seeing your pics there if you still have them.

OH I'm sorry, I got going there and didn't answer your ? blue alien!  No this IS NOT the same cemetery where the girl set herself on fire.  That cemetery is on Lake Ave. sorta behind the Dole Mansion.   The only thing I will say about that, is that it wasn't even that long ago that happened.  It was . . 1996 or something and it was simply a sad suicide.  The poor girl happened to be in this cemetery, there is no connection between the girl and it.  I know someone who has talked to family of this girl and it is simply a real, sad story and they are not for the attention it has somehow gotten.    Of course, I know, I got this from a friend of a friend sorta thing, but if that is true (and I believe it is) I will leave it alone in respect for the family.

If only I could get it taken off of the haunted places index on Shadowlands, you know?

D'OH!!!!!  AH LISA!!!!  YOU FOUND OUT MY "BEST KEPT" SECRET!!!!  LOL.

Alright.  Mt. Thabor cemetary is my all time FAVORITE ghost place.  It's what got me into doing this.  *sigh*  Here's my story . . .

In 2000 a friend and I found Mt. Thabor on some website so we set up our own little "investigation" and went out there.  It was the very first place I ever went to and did extensive research on.  From 2000 to about 2002 I went there about twice a month at least, no kidding.  Unfortunately, I was new and clueless and often went at night.  Once on a full moon night we were there from about midnight to 3am.  (NOTE: I DO NOT SUGGEST "HANGING OUT" IN CEMETERIES OR GOING TO THEM AT NIGHT.  I HAVE NOT DONE THIS SINCE AND AM AGAINST IT!)  We would have our mini recorders, a camera and a compass and we would just quietly stand around and observe.  I have never been more convinced that a place is haunted in my life.  It seems like SOOO long ago, I can't remember everything.  Ummm . . . I do still have notes and a TON of photos from this place.  Off hand, I remember some of what I learned at the library . . .

The land the cemetery is on was owned by Mr. Dyer in the 1800's.  It was supposedly the site of the first catholic church in that region, the church was called Little Church in the Woods but another source just told us it was North Barren's church.  The cemetery was on the church property.  The church was eventually changed to what is now St. Thomas on 176.  There may have been some "who ownes this land issues" between Mr. Dyer and Luke Gannon.  Both men and their families are buried in the cemetery.  I believe the Gannon house is still standing somewhere in this county?????  Anyway, many gravestones were lost.  AND to make matters worse, it seems that part of 176 there was built OVER some of the cemetery.  No one cared.  There are more graves than gravestones here and the records are TERRIBLE.  The most disturbing part is that during the time that I have been going here, I have seen stones being moved.   MANY lost souls here.

Unfortunately I "gave up" on my old research here when a former area investigator put a pic of this place in the paper.  Since then, it's been so sad.   Last year the place was littered with Runes and half burnt red candles on top of graves.   It made me sick.  Whoever did it, sure looked like they left in a hurry!  Also, an OLD outhouse still stands in the back corner of the cemetery.  We once found empty beer bottles in it.   The last time I ever went at night a kid was tying his friend to the old cross that stands in the middle of the cemetery, they were going to leave the kid there all night on a dare.   FOR THESE REASONS, I decided to leave it alone for a while.  Over the past year, I think I've gone about 4 times.  The last time was in June.  It was broad daylight and someone driving by called the cops on us.  We left, but still, I explained to the officer that we were not there to do harm.  He was actually cool, dare I say a bit freaked out by my seriousness on the subject.  ANYWAY . ..

As you can tell, I'm so protective of this place!  I got my first positive photo here, my first EVP and my cousin saw things.  I've heard a lot of things.  I just was going to "hide" it for as long as I could cuz I don't want to draw any more attention to it, I don't want people just going there for the hell of it, you know?  I know . . . *sigh* . . . that's how I got started but you know what I mean.  PLEASE do let me know if anyone wants to check it out.  I WOULD LOVE nothing more than to do a more professional investigation of this place.  I knew you ladies probably already knew about it, or would find it eventually with or without me.  I actually emailed Erica tonight and was planning on bringing it up . . . I had typed it then deleted it.  *sigh*  I was going to put it out to all of you eventually!  It's the best thing I've got, it doesn't get any better!!! LOL

I could talk about this place forever!  But for now, please ask me if you have any questions, I may still know the answers!!!

Hi Lisa,

Are there any particular stories that are connected to this cemetery? Is this the cemetery that a lady set herself on fire in or am I thinking of a different cemetery in CL? I am not sure where this one is, probably can find it pretty easy though.

My mom use to work with a guy that investigated hauntings with a group. I just remembered him when I was running down my bookmarks list. They investigated Mt Thabor Cemetary in Crystal Lake. A couple of years ago, they had a bunch of pictures posted, basically of orbs. I just went there and they only have one picture up now. I pass it weekly but never see anything, but have always been curious. Anybody else hear anything? It is off of Rt 176 and Mt Thabor. It zags over into Haligus there.

I asked my mom about her former co-worker. He moved to Wisonsing, but his group is still together. Maybe you know them. They just went to Bachelors Grove. Here's their link:

I love hearing new stories!!!  Ugh an old funeral home.  You know, it's weird . . not very many things freak me out . . but I will NOT live in an old funeral home.  I don't know, it just . . . YUCK!  It's gotta be the whole embalming thing.  Some of you may know this but there is a funeral home on route 120 in McHenry that was closed and stood empty for a couple years.  Now it has re-opened . . as a BRIDAL SHOP!!!  YES, brides and bridesmaid dresses.  I even saw an ad when they opened that bragged about their large showroom and I was like "Yes, large because it was made to show ..  .. . ." Yeaaahhh.    I know I'm probably being stupid but I just would not be able to bring myself to wear a dress from there!  EW!

Erica-I can check and see about investigating the old funeral home. I'm not sure how open the family is that lives there now, but I can always check and see. I'd be interested in investigating there, too. I had asked my mother (she is a close friend of the woman living there now) if the owner has talked about any other occurances, but she said she hasn't mentioned anything. I thought something might have been experienced since the owners had done some remodeling of the upper level over the past couple of years and I hear that sometimes doing construction or remodeling on a site may "awaken" spirits.

As far as things that have happened to me, I don't have anything I have really seen or heard. Pretty much just the feeling of being watched, or not alone, in the house mentioned above. I also saw the Paulding Lights up in Northern Wisconsin (pretty cool!) and took off down the trail to try and get a closer look of them with my cousins. We just figured we had to check it out since the other 60 or so people standing there watching them were doing just that-standing. It was a fun journey down the trail, even though a few of us got wet by crossing the creek! I've just always had an interest in the paranormal and history/folklore of particular areas. Halloween is the biggest holiday at my house, and my mom always had a fascination with vampires/Dracula/Vlad Dracul, probably because we're part Romanian and have that whole Transylvania thing going on. My friends always thought it was weird to be interested in such things, especially when we have so many angels and religious icons around the home. I've always expected to experience a paranormal experience in my own home since its over 125 years old and mostly because we have two front doors...one for the usual entrance and another that was used to bring a casket through if the family wished to have the "showing" of the deceased in what is now our living room. Now that's a bit ironic! Lately I've just wanted some more evidence of the spirits around us and meet some people that have similar interests and beliefs in the paranormal world.

Anyways...sorry for the short novel! But I must say that I'm happy to see that you took the initiative to begin such a wonderful group and I wish you the best of luck with it! I still don't know how you do it all with running your own Reiki practice and acting!

Those are all really interesting stories.  I'd really love to get a chance to investigate the old funeral home - do you think they might be open to something like that?  Places with good stories behind them are especially fascinating to me, and that certainly is a good story!!  Who knows though, maybe the activity they did witness was only the visitations of spirits - there may be nothing grounded there.  You'll have to keep us posted if you ever do notice anything or hear any more stories of the place though!!

What an interesting photo that sounds like too!  It also sounds like your Dad is open to this sort of thing!  You'll have to pick his brain for some more great stories!!

How 'bout you, do you have any stories of things that have happened to you - or what made you become interested in ghost hunting!
