Generally, as a group we set up teams based on
#1 personality and #2 the equipment they have. The most important tool any investigator can have is the ability to step back from the excitement of an emf going off or an evp found on the digital recorder, to analyze it like the potential evidence it could be. As individuals we all have this in various degrees, as leaders Chris & I try to set up teams so that we have a healthy dose of the analytic ability on each team we set up. All of us, have a favorite piece of equipment. Brenda is right, carrying all that around is a chore--so each team member has a piece they use through out the night, but this may vary from investigation to investigation. As a general rule our team has enough to go around and we do share. So, unless you have a specific piece of equipment that you are really curious about, don't bother buying a bunch of stuff. Join a group near you and learn about the equipment before you invest in it. My first piece of equipment was a nice camera, more for selfish reasons--I could use it anywhere not just ghost hunting! If there is a piece of equipment that really interests you--learn as much as you can about it and it's applications in ghost hunting--talk up the community and get recommedations on that one piece, then shop around--ghost hunting should not break the budget--get used if you can.
Hope that helps!

Honestly the best equipment you can get is yourself, an open mind , a like minded friend and a sense of humor.
But I realize that is not what you want to hear. Carrying around too much equip becomes a chore in itself.
I have a tool bag holds camcorder, digital camera, disposable 35 mm camera, flashlight, EMF detector, dowsing rods , as well as extra batteries for all the equipment.
What I use depends who I am with, what they are using and what we are most comfortable with. I have a digital voice recorder attached to me at all times. I don't usually catch EVP's but I do use it to help record data mostly. Keeps my hands free for other things. It is also the tool where the sense of humor comes in because you listen to your self and say "why did I say that?" or "I sound soooo dumb"
Find what you are most comfortable with. Some people lean to the EMF detectors, others cameras, That is the most important thing you need to be comfortable using the equipment or else rather than being a tool it becomes a liablity. Rather than put out a lot of money on some of the equipment hook up with someone who already has it and work with them to try out the equip to find out what you are comfortable with.
