Derek Acorah's Ghost Towns(Travel Channel) Review by Christopher Varney?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />Blissfully free of the hysterics of former "Most Haunted" co-host Yvette Fielding, well-known British psychic Derek Acorah has begun his own televised foray into the unknown with the self-titled series: "Ghost Towns."Fans of "Most Haunted" will find little new here, as Derek's formula is familiar, teaming with a self-professed believer (Danniella Westbrook) and a skeptic (Angus Purden). However, a key difference between "Ghost Towns" and "Most Haunted" is where the latter show focuses on one site, Derek examines an entire British town, and several of the (allegedly) supernatural hotspots it contains. In this respect, "Ghost Town" resembles a pure travel series, with Derek as something like a paranormal rock star signing autographs for fans, sporting a 50-foot long "Ghost Truck," and popping into the homes of local strangers for so-called "doorstep divinations."Otherwise, the investigations on "Ghost Towns" sport all the stuff we've come to expect on "Most Haunted,"including night-vision camera walk-thrus (with helpful comments by Derek's unseen pal "Sam"), requisite screaming, and Mr. Acorah going into very dramatic (and alleged) possessive states. All in all, however, "Ghost Towns" is more about Derek himself than the supernatural, which in itself, serves as a general backdrop to his celebrity. This is something most ghost hunters will find annoying, not to mention a blatant adventure in self-promotion by Derek. Yet despite past charges of fraud levied against him (by, for example, former "Most Haunted" co-star, parapsychologist Matthew Smith), I personally find Mr. Acorah charming and likable, and his show harmless. After all, as Derek's own bosses at Britain's Living TV recently pointed out, his program (as well as "MostHaunted") is more entertainment than science.Remember that while watching "Ghost Towns," and you'll be just fine.
